Invitation and Call for Papers 2024 Meeting

 

The President and Executive Committee members extend a cordial invitation for you to attend the 2024 meeting of the Cogan Ophthalmic History Society.  This will be our 36th meeting.

In 2024 the Society meeting will be held Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 22 at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

We will gather on Friday evening, April 19, for a reception for all meeting participants and their guests.  The reception will be held at the Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita restaurant in the Brickell Avenue area of Miami, just a few minutes walk from the JW Marriott hotelwhich will serve as the official lodging site.

The program of research presentations on topics in ophthalmic history will take place on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday morning, April 21.  An informal banquet will be held on Saturday evening at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Sciences on nearby Virginia Key.

A highlight of the meeting will be the Charles Snyder Lecture, to be presented by Cogan Society member Curtis Margo, MD, of the University of South Florida.  His talk is entitled: “Jonas Friedenwald, Eugene Wolff, and the Two Books that Helped Bridge the Specialty Gap”.

Registration for the meeting opens on January 2, 2024; payment may be made by credit card on the Society’s website, using the link under the 2024 meeting tab.  The standard registration fee covers daytime and evening events and all meals.  Regular registration closes Monday, March 25; late registration for an additional $100, is available until Monday April 8.  Reduced registration for guests participating only in the evening social events on Friday and Saturday is available.  Reduced registration is also available for registrants who do not wish to attend the evening functions.  Refunds minus a $100 service fee may be made until Monday, March 25 ; after that date no refunds can be made.

Abstract submission begins Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

A block of hotel room has been reserved at the JW Marriott Brickell Avenue.  Bus transportation will be provided to and from the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Saturday dinner.  A discounted rate of $295/night (plus taxes and fees) is available for April 19-21, a rate that is also in effect three days before and after.  There is no resort fee at this hotel.  Book your room at the JW Marriott Brickell Avenue using this link:

In addition, consider extending your trip to explore the many opportunities available in South Florida, including nearby Everglades National Park.  Additionally, many cruise ships depart from Miami every Sunday in the late afternoon.
