The 2010 meeting of the Cogan Ophthalmic History Society will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel Chicago/Lakefront. This venue is an upscale, all suite hotel located in the heart of Chicago. All of the elegant guest suites overlook the light filled atrium and offer spectular city or lake views. Each two-room suite features a private bedroom and a separate living room with a sleeper sofa and well-lit dining/work area. Gallery kitchens provide a wet bar, microwave, refrigerator and coffeemaker.
Strategically located in the heart of the city's top business, shopping and entertainment districts, the hotel is within walking distance of several of the most popular local and ourist destinations, such as North Michigan Avenue, Water Tower, the John Hancock Building, Navy Pier, the Chicago Art Institute, the Merchandise Mart/Apparel Center, and several outstanding museums.
The very reasonable group rate of $219 per night (plus taxes) will include complimentary, full cooked-to-order breakfasts each morning. The Society's Welcoming Reception will include beverages and snacks. Our reception will be held in a cordoned off section of the hotel's elegant atrium, and will also offer special hors d'oeuvres exclusively for our group.
David Williams
Special Invited Speaker
Dr. David Williams a veterinary ophthalmologist from Cambridge University, will give an invited talk on the life of Casey A. Wood, M.D. (1856-1942) as an ophthalmologist, his writing on such diverse topics such as methyl alcohol blindness and ophthalmic history, and his editing of the American Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology. Among hundreds of publications, Wood published the Fundus Oculi of Birds, and "The Mammalian Eye, with Special Reference to the Fundus Appearances." A second, special lecture will focus on Wood's comparative work concerning the fundus oculi form (human-mammalian-avian) and how he linked ophthalmology and ornithology.
Group Activity
On Saturday evening, during the 2010 Meeting, the Cogan Ophthalmic History Society will have the privilege seeing some items from the Galter Health Sciences Medical Library Northwestern University. Our host will be Mr. Ron Sims, MA, the librarian in charge of the Special Collections Department. Our members and guests will have the opportunity to actually examine an outstanding collection of holdings in optics, eye anatomy and eye diseases dating as far back as the 12th century.
